Google Ads for Hotels: Campaign Types, Budget and Measurement

Hotel advertising on Google is not a single campaign. Here is what each campaign type is for, the order in which to build a budget, and how to measure the bookings it brings.

The question hotel owners ask most about Google Ads is “should we advertise?” The better question is: on which searches, with which campaign type, and measured how? A guest typing your hotel's name and a guest searching for “boutique hotel in Kaş” are different people, and reaching both with one campaign is the fastest way to burn a budget. Here is the order in which we build hotel advertising on Google.

1. Start with the map: where a hotel shows up on Google

A guest searching for a hotel meets several surfaces on Google: text ads above the results; the hotel booking module, where prices and booking links sit side by side; Maps and your Business Profile; and visual placements such as YouTube and Gmail. In the module, paid links carry an ad badge and free links are listed separately. Each surface has its own rules, so start by checking where, and with what information, your hotel already appears. We cover the profile side in Google Business Profile for hotels.

2. Brand defense: own the searches for your own name

Someone who types your hotel's name has largely chosen you already, but you are not alone on that search. Google's trademark policy does not restrict the use of trademarks as keywords, so other booking sites can show ads on searches for your name.

So the brand campaign is a small but essential Search campaign: your hotel name and its common spellings become exact match keywords, and the ad goes straight to your booking page. According to Google, a Search campaign with an exact match keyword identical to the query is preferred over Performance Max for that query, so brand traffic is measured separately. Add sitelink assets for rooms and offers, and a call asset if you take phone bookings.

A guest searching your name has already chosen you; the ad's job is to bring them to your own booking page before someone else's checkout gets in the way.

We explain why in direct bookings vs. OTAs.

3. Non-brand search: high intent, tough competition

Searches like “family hotel with pool in Fethiye” or “boutique hotel Alaçatı” come from guests who don't know you yet but are ready to book. OTAs and other hotels in your area compete here too, and broad, scattered campaigns spend the budget on irrelevant clicks. What works is narrow themes: each ad group targets one intent (a concept, a location, a room type) and lands on a page that answers it.

Target by where guests are and the languages they search in. Read the search terms report regularly and block irrelevant intent, such as job listings or hotels for sale, with negative keywords. Google's optional AI Max layer for Search campaigns broadens matching, tailors ad text to the search and can send traffic to a more relevant page on your site, with each feature switchable on its own. But if your site lacks good pages, there is nowhere good to send traffic: first a booking-focused website, then automation.

4. Performance Max and Performance Max for travel goals

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type that reaches YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single campaign. You supply text, images and video in “asset groups,” and the system decides what to show where.

The hotel-specific version is Performance Max for travel goals. You pick your properties on a map or link your Hotel Center account, and Google suggests text, images and URLs for each property. Ads run across Google surfaces including the Travel channel, can use hotel ad formats when prices are available, and the Hotels tab reports each property separately.

Automation doesn't mean giving up control. Search themes steer the system, negative keywords cut irrelevant queries, and brand exclusions keep Performance Max off searches for your name in Search inventory. Above all, Performance Max learns from the conversion data you give it. If booking value is measured wrongly, it optimizes toward the wrong signal.

5. Google Hotel Ads, Hotel Center and free booking links

Prices in the booking module come from Hotel Center, where the property list and price feed live. The first step isn't paid: once you share rates through your Business Profile or your connectivity partner (a central reservation system, booking engine, channel manager or PMS), free booking links start to appear. Clicks cost nothing and bids don't affect their ranking; Google looks at consumer preference, value offered, landing page experience and historical price accuracy.

Hotel Ads, the hotel campaigns in Google Ads, are the paid links in the same module, and they need a Hotel Center account linked to Google Ads plus an up-to-date price feed. Google has retired the commission-based bid strategies older articles recommend; current options include target ROAS, a fixed cost-per-click bid and a bid as a percentage of the nightly rate (CPC%).

Linking has two side benefits. Hotel owners can get the “Official site” badge, which OTAs never receive and which appears for only one partner per property. And with Hotel Center linked, Search and Performance Max ads can be enriched with prices and images. In both cases price accuracy is decisive: if your feed and booking engine disagree on price, free and paid visibility both suffer.

A note on searches made from Türkiye

Since its 2021 decision on Google's local search and accommodation price comparison services, Türkiye's Competition Authority has kept monitoring how hotel results are designed and has fined Google again along the way. What you see searching from Türkiye may differ from what a guest in Germany sees, so judge campaigns by the markets your guests search from, not by your own screen.

6. Budget: sequence before numbers

There's no universal answer to “how much should we spend?”; region, season, room count and markets change everything. Instead of inventing a number, here is the order we build a budget in:

  1. Free first: an accurate price feed, free booking links, a complete Business Profile.
  2. Then brand defense: small but never switched off.
  3. Next, non-brand search: in your guests' markets, as their booking season opens, not once rooms sit empty.
  4. Automation once measurement is solid: scale Performance Max and Hotel Ads when conversion value flows reliably.

In Google Ads the daily budget is an average: on a busy day most campaigns can spend up to 2 times their average daily budget, but monthly spend won't exceed 30.4 times that average. For a fixed period such as an early-booking offer, campaign total budgets in Search and Performance Max let you set one total for a date range of 3 to 90 days.

Judge the budget not by one dashboard metric but by one question: how does the cost of winning this booking through ads compare with the commission an intermediary would take for it? That requires measurement set up correctly.

7. Measurement: from the booking engine to Google Ads

The most common problem we find in hotel advertising isn't a campaign setting; it's measurement. Bookings often complete in a booking engine on a separate domain, and the link between click and confirmation breaks. A solid setup:

  1. Conversion = completed booking. The tag fires on the confirmation page with the amount (value), currency and booking reference (transaction_id) to prevent duplicates. If your booking engine provider hosts that page, they place the tag.
  2. Auto-tagging on. Google requires it for hotel conversion tracking.
  3. Cross-domain measurement in GA4. Site and booking engine use the same GA4 tag ID, and the _gl parameter must survive redirects.
  4. One primary source. GA4 key events can be imported into Google Ads and arrive as secondary by default to avoid double counting. Never count one booking as primary from two sources.
  5. Enhanced conversions. The email or phone number entered at booking is hashed with SHA256 and sent to Google to improve accuracy.
  6. Consent mode for European guests. Collect consent from users in the European Economic Area and pass the signals, including ad_user_data and ad_personalization, to Google, or risk losing data and personalization.
  7. Separate free from paid. Hotel Center's URL parameters show whether a click came from a free booking link or an ad.

One last note: Google supports only last-click attribution for hotel campaigns. Remember that when comparing reports; the number that matters is total direct bookings.

Mistakes that quietly burn budget

The same mistakes come up again and again in hotel ad accounts:

None of these needs a bigger budget; most are a matter of setup and discipline.

Bringing the pieces into one system

For a hotel, Google Ads isn't a standalone fix; it works together with the website, price feed, Business Profile and measurement. Brand search protects your name, non-brand search brings new guests, Performance Max and Hotel Ads scale on good data, and all of it depends on measuring bookings correctly. How guests find you through AI-assisted search is covered in hotels in AI search.

At our Studio, we handle hotel websites and ad accounts together with this logic, setting up measurement from day one. To see how we work, take a look at our work.
